A little girl and her father were crossing a bridge. The father was kind of scared so he asked his little daughter,
‘Sweetheart, please hold my hand so that you don’t fall into the river.’
The little girl said, ‘No, Dad. You hold my hand.’ ‘What’s the difference?’ Asked the puzzled father.
‘There’s a big difference,’ replied the little girl.
‘If I hold your hand and something happens to me, chances are that I may let your hand go.
But if you hold my hand, I know for sure that no matter what happens, you will never let my hand go.’
So hold the hand of the people who you work with rather than expecting them to hold yours, if you really value them…..
Since childhood I was taught by my mother “start with trust” and trust will follow throughout, making life easier. Today when I look at her she is calm and composed at 76 years of age, still trusting people. Although she never worked in a corporate environment, she very well knows the strength of Trust.
Any positive working relationship is based on trust, especially in a business environment where functions are inter-dependent to contribute to organizational growth. Employee to employee, Employee to Manager, Manager to Manager, function to function- when the sense of trust is strong, it adds efficiency to work thereby reflecting in productivity. Trust culture encourages loyalty, employee retention, stress free work environment and mutual respect.
How do we develop trust in the workplace?
Stop directing and telling, start using reflective questions to know opinion. This will keep employees involved and engaged. This will help employees know that their views count
Let’s talk about you- Employees need a little attention, someone who they can confide in at work, someone who is all ears when they want to talk. Simply an active listening helps to a great extent in building trust
Trust employees by delegating them important tasks. They will feel more responsible and more empowered. The objective of delegation here is not to complete the task but to give people an opportunity to explore and self-development.
There could be more that can be done to keep “TRUST” intact at the workplace. But the most important is to tell your people often, “I trust You”.
